Subject: FAMILY RESEARCH
Date: Saturday, April 05, 2003 12:09 AM
Hi Don, Steve Kinsey here. I am writing from Toledo, Ohio. Hope you can help me a little. Doing some Kinsey family research and
I hit a stone wall in Pa., and came across your Jacob E. Kinsey in Bucyrus, Ohio: born in Lancaster County, Pa. in 1805. This is the link that listed his bio in Bucyrus,Ohio....
http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Crawford/CuBu2.htm
My gr-gr-gr-grandpa Joseph Kinsey was from Pa, and his son Joseph J. likewise. After that they moved to Ohio.
The first Joseph was born in Pa. in 1800. Not sure where though.
Joseph J. was born c. 1824, and died in Ohio in 1869. We have not been able to locate any type of death notice other than a listing in the 1870 mortality schedule. His place of birth was listed as Lancaster, in Lancaster County, Pa.
However, on one of the census indexes we found, it was listed as the town of Rapho, in Lancaster County, Pa. So, we're not certain.
We are assuming that the senior Joseph was from the same area.
My question is whether or not you have found any of the siblings of your Jacob? Daniel and Maria were the parents of twelve children, and it is possible that your Jacob and my Joseph Sr. were brothers.
The only flaw to this theory is that there are no other Josephs listed in your Gedcom for the Kinsey family. May or may not be an issue.
Anyway, is there any information that you can provide to prove or disprove this theory? Or any links to follow up on this?
All help will be much appreciated.
Thank you,
Steve

The informant on the death certificate was Jennie Kinzey. She is probably
wrong. She was at least 80+ and third wife. If her info were to be
correct
it would place old Roy at at least 80 when Roy Dewalt was born. Possible I
guess but not probably. I suspect it is an error on the death certificate.
I don't know any of the Kinzeys. My father, Clarence Perry Kinzey, drowned
about 49 years ago. He had a brother Charles but I don't know his
whereabouts. He had a sister Dorothy Mae but I don't know her married
name.
I didn't mean to shake anything up here. I am pretty sure the death cert
is
in error but I just wanted to check with others.

Don, I was in correspondence with Glen Franklin
Kinzey back in 1999 and he provided me with his research of the Kinzey line
back to Dewalt and Sarah Wertz. Meddinger must be Glen's first cousin since
Roy Dewalt was his grandfather also, many be different wives. My first
reaction to the death certificate is who supplied the information? They may
not know who Roy Dewalt's father was and put down Roy.
I haven't been able to find Glen now and didn't
get a return from an email to his daughter a couple years ago.
I would be very interested in filling in some
later lines, Glen sent me 27 pages of the descendants of Jacob Kinsey and
Elizabeth Reasor.

I have been working on Kinzey. Roy Dewalt Kinzey
was my grandfather. I just received his death certificate and it state his
father was Roy Kinzey. Where did Amos Frank come from. Also, Roy Dewalt's wife
at his death was "Jennie" which would make her #3 instead of #1
wife.
This is an important part for me to clarify because
it might mean that Amos Frank and Icy were not in my direct line.
You can email me at meddinger@cms.hhs.gov if you want or
have any more clues. Also I show Roy Dewalt born in KS, married in OK to Viola
Catherine Brollier and died in OR. I am showing Dewalt Kinzey born in PA , and
married to Sarah Wertz.

Subject: Miriam Fredrick's passing
To All,
Miriam Orpurt Fredrick co-author of our family history book "North
Carolina Oylers and their Descendants" passed on yesterday afternoon
less than two months shy of her 100 birthday. Carol & I with our
daughter and grandchildren last saw her about 3 weeks ago and we
knew her time here was short.
We enjoyed spending countless hours with her analyzing our genealogy finds
from
libraries, court houses and also from many cousins close and quite
distant. Carol and I learned a lot from her and thought of her more
as an aunt than Carol's first cousin once removed. She was without
a knee joint after failed replacement surgery but never complained
and enjoyed life to it fullest.
During our forays we many times used cramped 2 person elevators in
small libraries and courthouses . Once to visit a relative in Peru, IN
I pulled her backwards up steep grassy bank in a wheel chair while
her eyes got as big as saucers.
While it was lots of work for me taking along a wheel chair and/or her
electric
cart which each trip I disassembled and re assembled many times I
thoroughly enjoyed taking out someone so appreciative of Carol & I.
Over the
8 or so years we did research together we made almost 60 trips of one
sort or another with her and many other distant trips without her for
the books research in our quest to find all the needed information.
As sisters Miriam's Oyler mother married an Orpurt while Carol's Oyler
grandmother married a Gilbert. In addition Miriam lived with Carol's
mothers Gilbert family during her teen years in order to attend
school in town at Peru, Indiana. Hence she has always been a close
cousin to Carol.
Having an interest in genealogy since the 1930's Miriam also did research
on the DeMuth, Kinsey, Orpurt & Wissinger lines and being almost 100
yrs old knew many of the relatives we researched and wrote about in our
book.
Many of her remembrances of the old days are preserved in the Oyler
book. Of the dozens of first cousins of Sarah Wissinger and Henry Oyler's
14
children there are now only three left. The youngest is 78 and the
oldest is also 99 with Carol's mother in the middle at age 87.
Our goal was to complete the book while Miriam was still alive and for
that
we are thankful as she got to enjoy it her last year. Last fall at age 99,
we took
a very frail Miriam back to see her old church in Mishawaka, Indiana where
she had
been a member of the board. She was able to tell us the route from her
head
for the 1-1/2 hour drive which to me was amazing for someone in their
100th year.
Miriam was however finding it difficult to accept the changes that had
taken
place in the churches physical building over the 10+ year period since she
had
moved to the Brethren Retirement Home in North Manchester, Indiana.
I once saw a sign that said "When a person dies we lose a
library". In Miriam's
case we have preserved as much of that as we could in our Oyler
family
history book. All the cousins are blessed for her abilities and
early
efforts to document their genealogy from times past.
For the cousins receiving this email letter we have plenty of books left
for $32 so contact us for one.
Sincerely, Curt & Carol Gamble

I rechecked my source for the David Kinsey - Carlotta Horner marriage. The
transcript of the marriage book has
Kinsey, David Homer, Charlotte 11-19-1846
ref http://www.usigs.org/library/vitals/oh/preble/
The name is wrong (should be Carlotta Horner) but I think the date is
correct. David was in Randolph Co, IN by 1852 when he remarried Mary Adams.

Andrea,
My records indicate Jacob and Ann Margaret did not have a son by the
name of Samuel. Do you have something that indicates otherwise?
There are some Kinsey connections to the Hoch and Klein families,
however. Can you tell me a little more about the will you found online?
For example, where was it from? This may provide a lead in answering
your question.
Thanks,

I found a will online for a Samuel Kintzi/Kinsy who died bef 15 Mar 1883. It bequeaths his

and Ann Margaret ?

Paul,
I was in Preble Co OH one day last week and picked up the following Kinsey
marriages from Book 1. I don't have matches for most of these in my file,
and I have no clue how they fit in or if they do.
Please feel free to forward to the list. I've noted where I found the
marriage and when I have a copy, in case someone wants a paper copy of one of these.
I tried to get copies of the early ones and didn't ask for all of them,
because the librarian at Eaton was required to handle the book herself.
She also had microfilm but said the book made better copies.

Sorry my mail came back to you. I get a lot of that on this Juno.,
that's what you get on free stuff.
The reunion sounds like fun but it a little far for me to go. My son,
Jim, was there for 5 years and I went there twice and he paid for it both
times. He was in the Air Force for 30 years, getting out last year.
It is a little too far to drive for me anymore. My grandmother was the
daughter of Lewis Heiney, and she and her brother, Jacob were raised by
there grandparents, Jacob Heiney and Susannah Kinsey Heiney. This was
after both mother and father died. They were about 9 and 6 at this time,
1864/5.
Susannah Kinsey was a daughter of Abraham Kinsey who pioneered this area
of Eastern Indiana. I can't
tell you his occupation but I think he was a entrepreneur in the land
business here. I have records of some
30 to 40 parcels of real estate in which he was engaged in the buying or
selling. He would buy property
for $2,000, then sell it the next year for $2,200, making 10% profit,
with no real estate taxes. $200 would
keep most families in good stead for a year and a lot them did with less.
I am still looking for the reason Abraham died of a gunshot wound. This
was in Pendleton, Madison Co.,
Indiana. His wife had died the year previous and some speculation that
it was self inflected. He had a daughter in Madison Count although his
home was in Dalton Township, Wayne Co., IN. I have been searching for
this for 10 to 15 years but I won't give up.

Got your print out OK but would appreciate your E-mails
as to how you do it. I am descended through Abraham, his
dau. Susannah married married Jacob Heiney, his son, Lewis
m Catherine Lutz, their daughter, Susannah, m Wm. Oscar Thalls. Their 3rd
daughter, Rosa Nell Thalls Coomes was my mother. Can fill you in on the
Heineys, Thalls, Lutzes
(very little on this family). There at one time was a
Max & Virginia Kinsy Turner who were into genealogy. He was
of the same Lutz family that I am related from, Lovina
Lutz, d of Baltzer and Nancy Eby Lutz. My grandmother was
Susannah Lovina Heiney. The Turners led me to my grandmother's Aunt
Lovina. We didn't have any idea where
the name came from. She was an older sister and married
David Kinsey in 1848. The Lutzes came to Delaware Co.
Indiana after 1840 so Lovina wasn't listed in 1850 with
the Lutzes. An interesting bit of facts which every family
has some interesting stories.

Benjamin H. Kinsey
was born October 30, 1809, son of John and Elizabeth
(Heckman ) Kinsey on a
farm where the Veterans Administration is now
located in Dayton, Ohio. He
learned the carpenter trade in Dayton when it
was a mere village. According
to a Montgomery County marriage license date
he was married on or soon after
January 6, 1831 to Elizabeth Ashenfelder.
Three children were born at Dayton,
namely: Susannah, September 23, 1831;
John H. May 4, 1833; and Phoebe Ann,
October 12, 1834.
In November, 1834 the family moved to Hagerstown, Wayne
County, Indiana
where Mr. Kinsey began manufacturing furniture, and under the
old system,
made most of the coffins for the neighborhood. He became a member
of the
German Baptist Church in 1837 etc."

I assume you have seen the Mays Cemetery listing from your
comments.
Will keep looking and maybe others (Bob Kinsey) can do some
searching. You
have done a remarkable job pulling this together. There are
only four of us
from Benjamin Heckman descendants and no one from John H. I
don't believe I
have the right dates for his death since I find them in the
1880 census.
Also nothing on William A. (son) descendants.
This is
what I have now after adding your info and correcting some of my
data. A lot
is still not verified data.

Hello all,
I was reading Paul's email and realized that I had made an error. The first census that I included was 1850, not 1860; the second census listing was 1860.
Sorry for the confusion, if there was any!
Andrea
Cheryl, as you can see there are a bunch of us keeping track of the Christian Kuntzi line. We have a pretty large data base and are always interested in expanding the data as well as sharing what we have.
Shirley Thompson Pyle is on our list and she is a direct descendant of Samuel H. Kinsey and Luticia. Maybe between the two of you, you would be able to expand our data base. I have made an attempt to add your data and 1880 census info into my file and will print it out for additions and corrections.

Hi Don,

I met her grandson this summer when I made a trip to Indiana to research the family. Martha Kinsey married Isaac Welker - they had 4 children. They moved to Canada in 1913 I think.
Are you related to the Kinsey family or do you just do research on various families and put it on the web?
I am looking forward to hearing from you. Andrea,
I have the 1880 census and didn't find William Kinsey in Kansas or anywhere
else and the only two census records which I feel certain are for "Uncle
Bill" are 1850 and 1860, Kosciusko Co., IN; they both have William and Mary
Kinsey and Martin Immel in common.
1850
Dwelling 74, family 77 (neighbor of Daniel W. Kinsey, family 76 and Abraham
Kinsey, family 75)

line 14: KINSEY, Meary; 21 (1829); F; W; Ohio; can't read or write
line 15: IMMEL, Martin; 5 (1845); M; W; Indiana; can't read or write;
pauper.
1860
Dwelling 295, family 298
line 23: KINSEY, William, 36 (1824), M, farmer, $2000, $400, OH
line 24: KINSEY, Mary, 34 (1826), F, W, OH
line 25: KINSEY, John W., 9 (1851), M, W, IN
line 26: KINSEY, Samuel, 7 (1853), M, W, IN
line 27: KINSEY, Elizabeth, 4 (1856), F, W, IN
line 28: KINSEY, Mary E., 2 (1858), F, W, IN
line 29: KINSEY, Charles, 2/12 (1860), M, W, IN
line 30: IMMEL, Martin, 16 (1844), M, W, farm laborer, IN.
Charles Kinsy and John W. Kinsey in the 1880 census for KS could be

(<http://www.kshs.org/cgi-bin/cenidx95.cgi>) is Kinsey, J. W., 43 [ca. 1852],

which isn't on line yet and that's a good one to home in on next.
A biographical sketch of Jacob H. DELL (husband of Mary SHAUP) from a
history of Elkhart Co., Indiana mentions daughter Mary, wife of William
KINZIE. Their 1 Sep 1846 marriage is recorded in Elkhart Co.

Dear James, Rob, Martha, and Don
I obtained your names and addresses from World Tree projects
on Ancestry.com, all listing the family of John Ashenfelter (or Ashenfelder) and
Minerva (Durand) Kinsey. I am writing a scholarly paper on the Durand family and
am looking for original sources for all claims. I have borrowed some of the
information gleaned from your pages (sorry, but I only listed two of the four of
you, to save space - my paper is now 63 dense pages long and growing), but am
having trouble making the facts you present jibe with the ones I am uncovering.
So I thought I would just plead directly with you for proofs you might have.
Here is what I have so far in my paper:
39. MINERVA
4 DURAND was born about 1843 in
Ohio,
daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Barner) Durand.[
[1]]
She married, 3 January 1858, Peru, Miami Co., Indiana, John H. Kinsey, son of Benjamin
Heckman and Elizabeth (Ashenfelter) Kinsey, born 4 May 1833, Dayton, Montgomery
Co., Ohio, died 12 March 1866, New Waverly, Cass Co., Indiana.[
[2]]
The 1860 census for Cass Co. shows John H. Kinsey 27, a carpenter, native of
Ohio,
with real and personal estates valued at $350 and $200, respectively, and
Minerva 17, born in
Ohio.[
[3]]
The
1870 census for Tipton Township, Cass Co., has John H. Kinsey 36, a native of
Ohio,
with Minerva 26, also native to
Ohio,
William A. 9, and Ernest 4/12, both sons born in
Indiana.
John “works on sawmill” and has real and personal estates worth $2800 and $1000,
respectively. They are living with B. H. Kinsey 52, born
Ohio,
a farmer with real estate valued at $10,500, and Elizabeth Kinsey 60, born in
Pennsylvania,
his parents. Also in the household are a laborer and the Lakin family of
three.[
[4]] Minerva’s sister, America D. Durand, and father, Samuel Durand, live
nearby.
Children,
possibly also including Edna, all with surname
Kinsey:[
[5]]
1 Francis M.,
5 who perhaps died
7
August 1859
and was buried in the Mays Cemetery, Pipe Creek Township, Miami Co.,
Indiana.
2 William A., born
about 1861, Indiana, said to be of
St.
Louis,
Missouri.[
[6]]
Married in
St.
Louis
and had four children Edna, Arthur C., Richard G., and Howard O., born about
1880-1899, all surnamed Kinsey.
3 Ernest, born
February 1870, Indiana, probably Cass Co.
4 Nina (or
Tina), who perhaps died
22
August 1870
and was buried in the
Mays
Cemetery.
[1].
U.S.
Census, 1850, Pipe Creek Township, Miami Co., Indiana, roll 160, p.
204.
[2].
Durand,
Durand, 142, mistranscribes surname
from Beach as “Binsey”; Beach, “Durand,” 232, “K” in “Kinsey” easily misread as
“H” or “B”, matched clearly to “K” in careful check of letters elsewhere in the
typescript;
History of Cass, Miami,
Howard, and Tipton Counties, Indiana, 51, however has it “John H. Hinsey, of
St. Louis, Missouri”;
Tombstone
Inscriptions, Mays Cemetery, where her parents are buried, Peru, Indiana,
lists several Kinsey's: “Kinsey (-?)ina [d.]
22
Aug 1870 [section] A son of J.H. & M.” might be a son of John H. and Minerva, and
“Francis M [d.]
7
Aug 1859 A son of J H & (H?)” might be another.

U.S.
Census, 1870, Tipton Township, Cass Co., Indiana, roll 302, p. 279, dwelling 52,
families 52. Samuel and America D. Durand live in dwelling
50.
[5].
U.S.
Census, 1870, Cass Co.; Don Smith,
Ancestry World Tree Project: Don Smith – Ancestry Index, database online, Ancestry.com, Minerva Durand and John
Ashenfelder Kinsey, lists Francis, William A., Edna, and Nina, also adds “Lived
in New Wav, In. Cass Co.;” Rob S. Patterson Jr. (name derived from email address
robspatterson-jr@email.msn.com),
Ancestry
World Tree Project: h8809, database online, Ancestry.com, John Ashenfelter
Kinsey, lists Francis M., William A., Edna, and Tina. Nina (or Tina) and Francis
M. are probably the children in the graves, daughters perhaps but not
conclusively. The middle name Ashenfelder, or Ashenfelter, does not jibe with
the H. of the censuses. New Waverly is about 8 miles from
Peru.
[6].
Durand,
Durand, 142; Beach, “Durand,” 232,
listed only as W. A. Kinsey, also has “Address 2012 Rutger St. St Louis.
Mo.” He is the only child listed.
Some of my questions are probably obvious
now: 1. Where does the Ashenfelt[d]er middle name come from? That
is, what is the proof? Is there a reason that the censuses say H. and not A.?
For example, is Ashenfelter sometimes spelled Hashenfelter? I sense that this is
not so. 2. I am convinced of the children William A. and Ernest,
and just shy of convinced of Francis M. and [?]ina. But I have no evidence yet,
other than your say so, that Edna is a child. Does any of you have evidence of
her. Or has she somehow been confused with Ernest? Where do you get your lists
of children? 3. Are Francis M and [?]ina girls or boys? I believe all of
you say girls but the grave transcriptions (if they are indeed the graves of the
Kinsey children) say boys. 4. Is is Tina or Nina? I am a glutton for detail so would welcome anything you
could send me. I happily acknowledge contributors and will add the names of all
who help. I would like NOT to use World Family Trees as references, because they
are usually unsourced. In this case, your name would appear in my
Acknowledgements section which currently looks like

----------------------Isaac Naff, Sr. and Military Petition 1799
John, thanks. Since I sent the first reference to the Petition other people
have come up with the way to actually look at the manuscript. I am always
amazed at what is available if one only knew how to find it. There are two
Petitions, one dated December 13 and is the one from Botetourt German
Baptists. Can find http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/amhome.html
then search
engine and then typing German Baptist. It sure looks to me that two of the
signatures are Christian Kinsey and Abraham Kinsey written with German
Script. Any of you have thoughts?
Then there is another Petition dated December 14 Franklin County with Jacob
Kinsey's signature. Can get that one by typing "tunkers" after the
search
engine.
Maybe some of you have seen these before. Any thoughts would be well
received.

According to land and tax records, Jacob 1.1.2.1. lived in Botetourt Co.
until 1813 when he purchased land in Franklin Co.
Jacob Kinsey 1.1.3. owned land in Franklin Co. from 1784 to ca. 1803 when
his sale to Theodorick Webb was acknowledged in court and the deed for that
sale is apparently missing.

I felt like I had found a gold mine this morning
when I came across the pictures of some of the Kinseys at the Family Tree
Maker site. I am a granddaughter of Lillie Echo Kinsey Curry Davidson.
My mother was Lavella Marie Curry Munger Grauel. I am very interested in
learning what I can about the family. I was very glad to get the
pictures of great great
grandfather Daniel and great grandfather Noah.
I have been to both of their grave sites, Payette, ID and Halfway, OR.
My mother is also buried at Halfway, beside her father, Samuel Curry. I hope to hear from you!

John,
Congrats on finding your own answer. There may be other Kinseys who
obtained land patents in Indiana besides those shown on the BLM website.
These would be people who bought land on credit very early instead of cash,
and those who bought land with military land warrants. In addition, there
are just some differences in data between the BLM and the Indiana land
entry books that are unexplainable.

in the 1860 census index for Starke Co. is Anna Kinsey on p. 386. This is
likely John Kinsey's widow and won't know for certain until I look at the

Granville,
Tragic deaths can linger in the family memory for generations and
there must
be a lot of Abraham's descendants around who might have some clues.
According to my records he fathered seven children by his first
wife and two
by his second and I don't know much about any of them. What
happened to
Abraham Jr.? He was in Kosciusko Co., IN in 1850.

Dear Andrea,
I have a nagging anxiety about my g-g-g-grandfather
Abraham
Kinsey. Early in my research I was told that Abraham
died
of a gunshot wound. He was temporarily living in
Pendleton, Madison Co.,
Indiana. The lady who passed this on to me was Helen
Roth(her maiden name).
Being somewhat naive in the researching game I
accepted this. Now I hve
the idea that this could be wrong. I have seached court
records etc. whithout any results either way. He was
buried idn Wayne Co., Indiana(Brick Church Cemetery,
Hagerstown, IN). He was born in Brotetort Co. Virginia
in about 1887. Was in Montgomery Co., Ohio in 1819 and
came to Wayne Co., Indiana as early as 1823. He got a
patent deed on a
tract of land which he deeded over to his daughter and
son-in-law, Jacob
& Susannah Heiney, my gr.,gr
grandparents. I have about 35 deeds of land Abraham had
at one time or another. He also had a tract of lond in
delaware Co.,
Indiana which he sold to a Moses Lutz who I have reason
to believe was a
brother to Baltzer Lute whose
daughter, Catharine married Lewis Heiney, son to Jacob,
Heiney. Lewis
and wife Catherine were the parents of Susannah Heiney
my grandmother.
Any information you run across concerning these
families
would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and good luck
on you research.
Granville Coomes
Andrea,
Sorry I didn't mention his date of death. He died Sept.
11, 1872. There were newspapers in Anderson, Pendleton
and New Castle at the time but have never turned up anything. I never
thought of the State Library, thank you
and the thought of checking funeral homes. There are
probabaly some old county directories in some of the libraries. Our local
library has one of Wayne Co. dated
1859. I am sure Anderson has one for Madison Co. and
possibly the New Castle Library has one for Henry Co.
Funeral homes advertise in the county directories. Thank
you for the suggestions.
Granville
Granville,
When did Abraham die? This may be hard to know, if he deeded all his land
over to descendants before his death. I expect it was before 1882, when IN
death records were first kept. In the unlikely event it was 1850 or 1860,
he would be included in the federal mortality schedule. These records are
on microfilm at the Indiana State Library.
If you can find out from which funeral home he was buried, you might find
their records. They did often record cause of death. There were also
some
newspapers, very few in the area before 1850.
It's kind of difficult to know where Abraham might have left legal records,
since he appears to have had land in several counties. Have you looked for
probates in his counties where he (once) owned land as well as the county
where he died?
Is Anderson in Madison Co? There was a newspaper in Anderson in the
1840's. Perhaps they would report a sensational death, if such did occur.

Dear Andrea,
I have a nagging anxiety about my g-g-g-grandfather Abraham
Kinsey. Early in my research I was told that Abraham died
of a gunshot wound. He was temporarily living in Pendleton, Madison Co.,
Indiana. The lady who passed this on to me was Helen Roth(her maiden
name). Being somewhat
naive in the researching game I accepted this. Now I hve
the idea that this could be wrong. I have seached court
records etc. whithout any results either way. He was
buried idn Wayne Co., Indiana(Brick Church Cemetery,
Hagerstown, IN). He was born in Brotetort Co. Virginia
in about 1887. Was in Montgomery Co., Ohio in 1819
and
came to Wayne Co., Indiana as early as 1823. He got a patent deed on a
tract of land which he deeded over to his daughter and son-in-law, Jacob
& Susannah Heiney, my gr.,gr
grandparents. I have about 35 deeds of land Abraham had
at one time or another. He also had a tract of lond in delaware Co.,
Indiana which he sold to a Moses Lutz who I have reason to believe was a
brother to Baltzer Lute whose
daughter, Catharine married Lewis Heiney, son to Jacob, Heiney. Lewis
and wife Catherine were the parents of Susannah Heiney my grandmother.
Any information you run across concerning these families
would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and good luck on you research.

"DAVID W. KINSEY, Cashier of the Citizens' State Bank of New Castle, Ind.
This gentleman represents one of the oldest as well as influential families
of this section of Indiana. He is the youngest son of Lewis and Catharine
Kinsey. His father and grandfather moved to Wayne County, Ind., when the
former was a lad of twelve years of age, continuing to live in said county
until he was twenty years of age, when he married Catharine Shultz, who was
a native of Pennsylvania, and immediately thereafter settled in Henry County
on a small farm situated one-half mile north of where the town of Millville
now stands, where on the 1st day of February, 1846, David, the subject of
this sketch, was born.
The family lived here until the spring of 1847, at which time they moved and
located on a farm about six miles east of New Castle, in Liberty Township,
where the father and mother and such children as remained at home continued
to live and carried on farming operations until the year 1872 when they
again moved, locating on a farm three miles northwest of Hagerstown, in
Wayne County, where they now reside. They are members of the German Baptist
church and for many years the father has been a minister in the church.
His family consisted of five children- Martin, Anna, Sarah J., Catharine
(who died when about six years of age), and David, our subject who spent his
youth upon his father's farm, attending the common schools during the winter
season until the year 1864.
He enlisted as a private in Company G, One Hundred and Thirty-ninth Indiana
infantry, serving in this capacity for about six months and until the
discharge of his regiment. After his return home he attended the New Castle
schools, teaching school during the winter months, and was a law student
part of two years; was admitted to the practice of the law in 1869, but soon
after entered the office of the county clerk and clerk of the Circuit Court
as principal deputy, acting in this capacity until the death of the Clerk,
H. H. Hiatt. Mr. Kinsey was then appointed by the Board of County
Commissioners, Clerk, to succeed Mr. Hiatt, continuing to act in such
capacity until the next general election. He remained also with his
successor in office one year. July 1, 1873, at the organization of the
Citizens' State Bank, Mr. Kinsey was chosen Assistant Cashier, filling this
position one year, at the end of which time he was made its Cashier, which
position he still holds. He is also a Director in this bank, having served
in this capacity for several years. Mr. Kinsey has served as a member of
the Board of School Trustees of his town since 1880 having been elected to
such position in 1879.
In 1870 he was married to Sophia J. Shirk, a most excellent lady, and the
daughter of Benjamin Shirk, ex-State Senator. They have one daughter, Edna,
now ten years of age. He with his wife are members of the Evangelical
Lutheran church."

"SAMUEL A. KINSEY. Enterprising and energetic, Samuel A. Kinsey is actively
identified with the mercantile affairs of Wells County, being proprietor of
a general store and restaurant in the Village of Curryville, where his name
is well established, it being synonymous with honesty, thrift and
prosperity. A native of this state, he was born, October 3, 1874, in Noble
County, a son of Henry and Hattie* (Amazon**) Kinsey, and a grandson of
Christian and Mary Kinsey, pioneer settlers of Northeastern Indiana.
Henry Kinsey was long engaged in agricultural pursuits, having owned and
occupied a farm of forty acres in Whitley County, Indiana, where his death
occurred April 24, 1883. His widow survived him many years, dying in 1903.
They reared a family of seven children, as follows: William C.; Mary; Samuel
A.; Elizabeth; Walter, deceased; Ida; and Jessie.
Having obtained a practical education in the public schools, Samuel A.
Kinsey served an apprenticeship at the carpenter's trade, which he followed
successfully for several years, his mechanical ability being recognized.
Locating in Curryville in 1913, Mr. Kinsey embarked in mercantile pursuits,
and as proprietor of a well managed general store and a popular restaurant,
has built up a patronage in both lines of business.
On October 2, 1888, Mr. Kinsey married Hattie J. Plank, a daughter of Enos
and Sarah E. Plank. who reared three other children: Oscar, Frank and
Charles. Mr. and Mrs. Kinsey have four children, namely: Mildred Cleo, a
high school graduate, married Earl Guy, and has one child, Evelyn, born in
1915; Carl Henry born in 1901; Roy Enos, born in 1908; and Frances Lucile,
born in 1915. Mr. Kinsey is a stanch prohibitionist, and an active worker
in the temperance cause. Both he and his wife are valued members of the
Christian Church, and liberal contributors towards its support."

Sorry for the late response. I only have info for Eva Wolf (married Samuel
Harlacher) down, but am suspicious about Eva/Eve being Hannah Kinsey & Jacob
Wolf's daughter because that would make Hannah Kinsey Wolf 52 when Eva was born
(in 1816, per Derald), and Eva's only the fourth child (per Paul)! Derald may be
able to shed more light on this, because I think he has solid information from
Eva's father's will. Is she the daughter of Jacob and Hannah, Derald?
I can fill in from Eva and Samuel's children down, if you'd like.

Hello Paul, 31 May 2001
The Johann Peter Heckamn and wife Eliza Margaretha is of interest to a
number of us, including at least Mitzi, Derald, and I, who have the Heckman
background.
I'm still hoping for proof that Barbara Meyers last name is really Meyers
and in finding out who her parents were.
I've got more on John Jacob and Barbara's family. I'm guessing that John
is an anglicized form of Johann, more of a saluation than anything. Much
of the data in the following chart has been compiled with advice from Don

Great to see that we are trying to all get on the same page. All of us have
information but not all the same and maybe not right. Good place to start
with Henrys family.
Granville, I have it somewhat different, not saying mine is right.
John W. d. Feb. 1846 (C. Smith) m. Barbara Elizabeth Heckman Sept. 3, 1804
Hannah d. abt.1833 m. Jacob Wolf March 2, 1801 who remarried Elizabeth
Cripe(8/22/1834) after Hannah died
Mary Elizabeth m. Peter Heckman Sept. 5, 1803
Abraham b. April 11, 1787 (on headstone)
Infant b. Sept. 11, 1772
I tried to show the changes in red but couldn't figure how to do it.
I just figured out I had 16 pages of notes etc. just on Henry and Eve's
family, (one generation) called "Genealogy Report" in FTM format.
Probably a
lot of duplication since I havent edited it for a while. If anyone is
willing to go though all that and correct, add or just question I would be
happy to get those comments. Will attach, so those who don't want to
bother
can just delete. If you can't open and want to see let me know and I'll send
as another e-mail.

Fellow Kinsey researchers:
Please be advised that I have just posted an update to my web page.
Point your browser to:
http://members.home.net/johntippet/
Included with this update are the following (all in the Beckelhymer section
of my web site):
(1) I added transcriptions of the land tax lists of Franklin County, VA
(1786 - 1805A) for Beckelhymer/Picklesimer and allied families. These
include: Archer, Beckett, Dillman, Fishburn, Harger,
Kinsey,
Landis, Lazena,
Lemon, Logan, Phares, Prator, Rinker, Trout, Waggoner, Wimmer, and Young. I
found it interesting that there were no Rinkers listed even though they were
known to have lived in Franklin County for about 10 years per the personal
property tax lists. Apparently, they didn't own land.
(2) I added transcriptions of the land tax lists of Botetourt County, VA
(1782 - 1809) for Beckelhymer/Picklesimer and allied families. These
include: Beckett, France, John Henry,
Kinsey,
Lemmon, William Logan, Trout,
Waggoner, and Wedell.

3-18-2001I have found a site that I use quite a lot. It is called "The Ultimate
White
Pages" and can be found at: http://www.theultimates.com/white/
It gives you a way to check for the same person on six different telephone
look-up sites but you only input the name once.
What I have discovered is that some databases contain more information than
other databases (i.e. wife's name). Of course sometimes you find that some
databases are incorrect while others are correct.
This site has both a free service and a subscription service. I only use
the
free service... I guess I am just cheap. The free service seems to do
everything that I want so why pay.

Paul,
John Kinsey death is listed as 1788. It is most probably
1786 or 1787 based on info John MacPhee has provided. John is shown in
1786 tax records. His widow is shown in 1787.

Johannes registered to pay taxes in Botetourt Co, VA, 1781. He bought
property in Botetourt Co, VA, 01 Nov 1783. John Kinsey purchased 250 acres
on the north side of South Mountain from Patrick Bryson for 158 pounds. The
only record of Johannes or John KINSEY which has been found is the early
marriage record of his daughter Mary to John HOLDEMAN in 1797. Botetourt
County, Virginia Records of Marriage Bonds has John HOLDEMAN married to Mary
KINSEY December 17, 1796. It mentions parents of the bride; Clowery Young,
mother; Robert YOUNG, stepfather. John KINSEY, deceased father; security,

12 Mar 2001:Dear Mr. Dolan,
John Kinsey is included in a 1782 list of men who registered for recruitment
in the Rev. War, Capt. Neely's Company. Robert Douthat Stoner, A Seed-bed of
the Republic - Early Botetourt, a Study of the Pioneers in the Upper
(Southern) Valley of Virginia (Kingsport, Tenn.: Kingsport Press, Inc.,
1962).
John Kinsey purchased 250 acres on South Mountain from Patrick Bryson in
1783; deed book 3, page 235.
He is in the titheable lists for Botetourt Co., VA from 1781 to 1786. Some
interesting details: in the 1782 list he has 250 acres and the 1784 list is
for Capt. Neeley's Company of Militia. In the 1785 list, also for Capt.
Neely's Company, John Kinsey and John Kinsey Jr. are listed together as
white tithes above age 21. Botetourt Co., VA, lists of tithables, 1770-1789,
FHL reel 1906467. If John Kinsey Jr. was 21 in 1785 then he was born around
1764 and not 1782.
John (Sr.) is in the personal property tax lists, 1783-1786. In 1785, John
Jr. is also listed. John Sr. apparently died in 1787 as his widow is in the
lists for 1787 and 1788:
1787, 4 June; Kinsey, Widow, 2 horses, 6 cattle
1788, 15 June; Kinsey, Cloye, 1 white over 16 and under 21, 3 horses
VA, Botetourt Co., personal property tax lists, 1783-1810, FHL reel 2024486.
He is not listed in the Botetourt Co., VA will index and I don't have a deed
which would show when and to whom his 250 acres were conveyed.
In 1805 John Kinsey (Jr.) and Jacob Kinsey purchased part of a 250 acre
tract on the North side of South Mountain from John Holdeman and Mary his
wife, late Mary Kinsey, & Susana Kinsey, deed book 8, page 561. In 1809,
John and Elizabeth Kinsey sold their share of the 250 acre tract to David
Kinsey, deed book 9, page 631. John Kinsey made a marriage bond with
Elizabeth Mullendore in 1804 in Franklin Co. He would have been around 40
years old in 1804 if he was born ca. 1764.
Please check this information before you use it!
John Tippet is working on Botetourt Co. land tax records for the Kinseys and
will post them at his site.
From which of John and Elizabeth's children is your wife descended?

>----------------------------------The following is a point well taken........Genealogy is by no means an exact science and even under the best of
circumstances mistakes can creep into one's work. However, there are certian
rules one should follow in their collection of information and at the same
time be careful not to propagate suspect evidence. One very good example is
the LDS. In the past 20 years the submitted information to this prestigious
organization has become hugely speculative and grossly inaccurate. The sad
part of this equation, they post the information in an open forum and some
unsuspecting genealogist comes along and adopts it as fact, publishes it and
further adds to the problem.
My disllusionment with our Kinsey/Kinzie researchers came as a result of
just such practices, the result being, rather then rowing the boat up stream
I pulled it to the bank and left the race.
As to what you should do, or where to go, my best suggestion is to put
your
faith in a researcher named John MacPhee. In my opinion he's an excellent
genealogist with an eye for whats correct and a drive to find the truth.Name left off.....
-----Several years ago I entered a birth date of
February 5,1742 that I had found in some family
documentation I had. Paul Kinsey and John MacPhee
have commented on this date and I have since been
trying to confirm it. I have not been able to
confirm this date; nor, the vital dates on the
above Johannes, from the Catherine B Smith's book.
The dates from the Catherine Smith book more
closely line up with the statements in the
Christian Küntzÿ 1773 will; therefore, I have since
entered the dates for Johannes,1.1.2 vital
dates-of born 1755,died 1788.
I don't know what dates you have; but, would
appreciate any feedback on your dates. Bob Kinsey-----There has been a certain amount of
uncertainty on the above subject. It involves my
inserting a birth date of February 5,1742 for
Johannes Küntzÿ[1.1.2]that I had found in some of
my family documentation. I have never been able
to confirm this birthdate and it most certainly
does not fit into the Christian Küntzÿ 1773 will. With this birthdate Johannes would have been 31?
I, long ago, removed this birthdate and
inserted the dates from the Catherine B Smith's
book. I have never been able to confirm these dates, either? But,most of us use Catherine's
wonderful book as our base for the first four
generations of Christian Küntzÿ.
I thought I would send this global message, to suggest to anyone interested, that this date
is unconfirmed and should possibly be removed.
If anyone out there has confirmed birth and
death dates of Johannes Küntzÿ I sure would
appreciate hearing from them. Until next time, take care Bob Kinsey
-----I'm sure the information you have is for "my" Henry Kinsey (or
Henrich Kintzi, as he signed at least one document in Maryland). I'd be
pleased to have you list my site in connection with yours, since I'd
love to contact other descendants. And it seems as though his branch of
the family had little contact with the rest after Henry moved to
Maryland, ca. 1795. My own grandfather James Kinsey was the grandson of
Christian Kinsey, son of Henry. Christian lived all his life in
Frederick Co., Maryland, where his son George M. Kinsey (my
grandfather's father) was born. George married Margaret Jane Shuff, a
Moravian, in Creagerstown, MD, in 1837 and left Maryland for Ohio in
1849, moving to Dunkirk, Ohio (north of Kenton) where a railroad was
being built, in 1852. He built the first house in that town. He and
his older boys cut wood and timbers for the railroad, also farmed. My
grandfather James M. Kinsey was born in Dunkirk in 1854, supposedly the
second white child born in Hardin County. Later George operated a
grocery in Dunkirk. His two older sons, Jesse and George, served in the
66th Illinois regiment in the Civil War, marching through Georgia with
General Sherman's army. My grandfather, the sixth of seven children who
grew to adulthood, started work in a drug store at age 12 (after
completing the sixth reader), later worked in a hardware store as a
clerk and bookkeeper. After losing his first wife and two young babies
(heart problems), he relocated to the county seat, Kenton, Ohio, where
he met the young woman, Minnie Reed, who ultimately became my
grandmother. They relocated to Idaho (Fruitland and Boise) in 1911,
where I was born in 1929 after my mother Esther married Otto W.
Hendricks of Mountain Home, Idaho. Bob Hendricks --- I was reading up on buffalo chips and cow chips, recalling that Edward H.
Kinsey was employed as a chip picker on his way to Montana. It was quite an
industry and the ranchers would invite the cattle drivers to park on their
property overnight for a free year's supply of "prairie coal". That's
from
Back Trailing in the Heart of the Short Grass Country by John O. Bye.
There's a picture of Jack Kinsey in that book with a group of Ekalaka
citizens including Doc Hedges and I wonder if he is the same man Daniel W.
Kinsey mentions in his letter from Payette and from whom Edward purchased
land.
I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel here, maybe I'll find a small patch of
ground that hasn't been trampled.
John

An updated (2001) map of Henry Kinsey's land in Warwick Twp. I
presume this was CS 1.1.1. The proof is only coincidental: Warwick Twp. tax
records for Henry Kinsey end in 1781 and begin in Bedford Co., VA in 1782.
