Revolutionary Records
The compiler has made no particular effort to establish the Revolutionary service of Jacob Boon, head of this family, a task which can best be accomplished by his descendants themselves. However, it is with pleasure that we give here two items found by Mrs. Annie Price Ker, No. 249 above: From "A List of Soldiers of the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment who have received certificates for the balance of their full pay Agreeable to an Act of Assembly November Session 1781" Jacob Boon, Sol. Inf. By whom received ____ John Cobbs. Day received _____ March 11, 1782. Sum _____ Lb. 36. "This Register contains a true abstract of all certificates issued at the Auditor's Office to Officers and Soldiers of Virginia line on Continental Establishment. J. Pendleton, Auditor. Aud. Office 1 Aug 1792 Teste _____J. Carter The above is found in Vol. 176, page 91, at the Adjutant General's Office, Old Records Division, Washington, D.C. From Book 102, War of the Revolution, Issue of Quartermaster by Capt. Russell, 1781-82, Page 65: "Account of Articles issued by Capt. Charles Russell Quartermaster in the State of Virginia from the 1st day of June till the last day of Aug. 1781" Oct. 20. 113. Jacob Boon by J. Gunn 3 bushels of corn." (Over J. Gunn is written "order delivered") Book 102 is at the Adjutant General's Office, Old Records Division, Washington, D.C. _____ Also from Mrs. Ker. In this connection it might be appropriate to give a repetition or at least a reminder of two Revolutionary items given in Boone Bulletin 5 (June, 1929). On page 112 of that issue, in Dr. John Calvin Wright's article on Johan Diehl Bohun, may be found Dr. Wright's findings regarding Jacob Boon's membership in the Association of Freemen of Maryland, a semi-military organization formed in 1775 for the purpose of opposing British oppression. Dr. Wright refers to the Maryland Historical Magazine, Vol, 6, p. 242; Vol. II, pp. 164, 249. Also in Boone Bulletin 5, on page 121, in "Boones in the Revolution" by Hazel A. Spraker, may be found the following references to items in "List of Revolutionary Soldiers of Virginia, Dept, of Archives and History" by H. J. Eckenrode, Archivist: Jacob Boon, Auditor's Account XI, 39. Chesterfield (Courthouse) Supplement 61. War Collection Manuscript, 4, 91. In order to obtain the full items here referred to it is necessary to write to the librarian of the Virginia State Library, who will refer the inquiry to a research worker. $1 is charged for hunting up the record of any one soldier, and $2 for furnishing a copy of his record if there are no more than five references for each man. (See letter from Virginia State Library, BB 5, p. 121.) The compiler does not claim that any of these Revolutionary records, with the exception of the one given by Dr. Wright, have been identified as records of service of Jacob Boon of Franklin County. They are given here simply in order that anyone who is interested may follow them up and possibly succeed in fully establishing Jacob Boon's actual service in the War of the Revolution Editor's Note: Many descendants of Jacob Boon of Franklin County, Virginia are members of the Boone Family Association. Their membership, as far as possible, is indicated in their biographies above. There are other BFA. Members whose names are not included in this article because we have not sufficient data to properly place them in the Jacob Boon genealogy. I should be glad to hear from any BFA. Member who should be listed in this article but who has been omitted, or from any who can give additional data on any branch of this family. While additional names of the third and fourth generations can not be included in the numerical arrangement, now concluded, they can be presented in a supplemental section of the next installment. The fifth and sixth generations of this family group will be given in the next and concluding part of this genealogy, in Boone Bulletin No. 10. HAZEL A. SPRAKER, Historian and Registrar, B.F.A. This web host does not have the last two copies of the Boone Bulletin. D.J.S.
