The following is a copy of the diaries that WILLIAM THOMAS SMITH made from 1884 through 1900. We dont know when Tom Smith and his parents came to Berthoud. Judging by an 1884 diary (the earliest we have found) they were here at that time, living together. He homesteaded the 160-acre farm Northeast of Berthoud, Colorado but we have no date of his first working the place. The 1884 diary starts with him visiting in Indiana from January 16 to February 21. He began to plow sod on April 7, but there is nothing to indicate that it was the first sod he had plowed. From the diaries it is not certain which house is mentioned in certain building stages, but it seems that houses were in a couple locations before a house was built at the present site on the farm. Nine children were born there and both parents died there. The farm is now owned and farmed by a son, Herbert Smith.
